We are a civilization who had built our city inside a mountain. The core of the mountain is where our elevator is. The lower floors are the living quarters (the residential area). The upper floors are the offices, shopping areas, restaurants, etc. The most popular restaurant is “THE VIEW”, it is a restaurant built on the side of the mountain. It has half the restaurant suspended in mid air, with a breath-taking view of the surrounding. During the day, my friends and I like to go to “THE VIEW” for tea. This is the only place in our city where we could bask in the warmth of the sun.
It was a beautiful sunny Saturday. We’ve arranged to have tea at our usual hangout. I’ve met Maridith earlier at my quarters and we were to meet Olivia at the restaurant. As we make our way there, we were laughing and chatting loudly. When the elevator reached our destination level, Olivia turned to face us as she heard the commotion.
We could see the bright blue sky from where we were standing. Olivia smiled when she saw us. We were smiling at her too. But soon, we turned our focus towards a black dot in the distance sky. The black dot quickly became black dots, and they are growing bigger. In the mean time, we could hear some soft humming.
The outside world had became dangerous many years ago, therefore we had not seen any flying creatures in a long time. Curious, we moved towards the glass by the side of the mountain. Glazing intensely at the black dots. Fear started to creep into our hearts and our eyes widen when we could vaguely make out the shape. We rubbed our eyes, disbelieving what we have seen. They are huge bees and they are getting bigger as they get closer. I screamed and stumbled backwards.
My scream alerted everyone in the restaurant and had caused a panic. Some got out of their seats and ran towards the elevator. Olivia came over to help me get on my feet, but Maridith was too shocked to move.
The bees are now right outside the glass windows. They stared at us for a while before they started to bang the glass with their sting. The hair at the back of my neck was standing. I got a cold shiver, then I reached out and grab Olivia away from the glass. Before I could call out for Maridith to follow, the glass started to crack. I panicked and ran.
When I reached the elevator, I realized that Maridith did not follow. She was using her handbag to hit the intruders as they tried to squeeze their furry head through the broken windows. Tears filled my eyes. I am too scared to go help her. I ran into the elevator and I could see the bees stinging her as the doors closed.
I’ve left her behind. I am a coward.
